1) At cons you usually have a lot of space to move around, so there's no problem wearing a big, elaborate costume. Halloween parties though, are usually in people's homes or perhaps in a crowded bar/club. Showing up as a Big Daddy or Elsa with a 2 meter long train, just isn't going to work.
2) At most parties, people drink. And drinking/drunk people aren't very careful. They usually don't mean any harm, but before you know it they stumble and try to avoid falling by clutching onto and breaking that prop you spent two weeks putting together. Or they want to give you hugs - many hugs! - in their bloody vampire costume that will ruin yours. Or, if you're particularly lucky, they throw up on you.
3) A lot of cosplays can be quite obscure, and let's be honest: going to a Halloween party where nobody knows what you're dressed up as, just isn't any fun.
These are all reasons why I don't wear my cosplays for Halloween. Instead, I like to wear something cheap that I don't need to worry about getting ruined. Because I want to enjoy myself too!
This year, I'm going to be a female version of the "ultraviolent" Alex - the protagonist in the film A Clockwork Orange. It's a costume that is very easy to put together, and doesn't cost a whole lot of money either. Stay tuned for my next post, where I'll show you how I'm going to put together the costume.
