I admit I got into the Hunger Games franchise pretty late. I actually saw the first film for the first time only a year ago! I know, right? But I was immediately hooked, watched all the films, ran out to buy and read the books, and I very quickly decided that I wanted to cosplay Peeta Mellark.
I'm lucky enough to know a lot of really good cosplayers who also happen to love Hunger Games, so not long after I decided I wanted to make Peeta, a whole gang of us got together and decided to do the Squad 451/Star Squad from Mockingjay part 2.
Most of Peeta's clothes are bought and altered, so this is a fairly easy cosplay to do. Our entire group bought the same or similar items and we tried our best to buy items as close to the originals as possible.
THE JACKET
Not a very good photo. I'm sorry. I bought this jacket on Ebay. It looked pretty good as is. I only did some minor alterations to it. I painted the shiny buttons black, moved the pocket on the left arm over to the right arm, opened the sides at the bottom so it got slits, and added some rubber bands to the sleeves. Check out the photos of the finished costume below for details, since I completely forgot to take any progress photos of this.
THE TROUSERS AND BOOTS
These are the trousers that I bought, and I got them from Banggood. You can get the same ones here! For boots I used my own black army boots. Once again, check out the finished costume photos below for details!
THE ARMOUR
The armour was the biggest part of the costume that had to be made from scratch. It's made from black foam, black worbla, grey carbon fibre vinyl (but you can use black as well) and vinyl straps with velcro. Ardent Cosplay, who was Gale in our Hunger Games group, made a very helpful template for this armour, which made it a lot easier to make.
When I first made the armour I wasn't sure what to use in between the foam and worbla. In other words, I didn't know about the carbon fibre vinyl at that point. I discovered that later, which meant I had to cut out 16 small peieces that would fit into the holes in the worbla. If you're making this, do yourself a favour and put a larger piece of carbon firbe vinyl in between the foam and the worbla. That will make it way easier! Look below at the finished costume to see the armour with the carbon fibre vinyl.
THE HANDCUFFS
The saddest part of the costume. But also the most fun to make. And easy! It's made from a vinyl strap (same as on the armour) and two cam buckles. I chose to use cam buckles because that meant that I could easily take the handcuffs on and off myself - very handy when you have to to go to the toilet!
I filled the open gaps in the cam buckles with some polymorph and sanded them down. I then painted them to look like the locks on Peeta's handcuffs. Then I simply ran the vinyl strap through both of the buckles and made a loop at each end.
THE WIG
Peeta's wig is from Wig is fashion. It was a pretty good base wig, but it obviously needed some styling. I'm not going to go into too many details, but it has been blow dried for shape and cut shorter. I also filled in the entire base of the wig with black eye shadow. It took a while, but it gave it a really nice and natural look, so it was definitely worth it!
THE FINAL RESULT
Here you can see all the stuff I forgot to take progress photos of! The details on the jacket, the boots and the carbon fibre vinyl in the armour. In better lighting too!
